Project Background PDF Print E-mail

PDP began working in Ukraine in 1994. The project was born as a result of three Parliamentary exchanges between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine national deputies and US Congressmen in 1990-1993 organized by Indiana University.

The 5-year Democratic Parliamentary Strengthening Program funded by USAID launched In August of 2003, addressed the special needs of the Ukrainian Parliament in the context of two fundamental political events in the country: Presidential elections in October 2004 and Parliamentary elections in March 2006. Therefore, the program is split into three steps: the first one covers the period from August 2003 through October 2004 (prior to Presidential elections); step two - from October 2004 to March 2006 (between Presidential and Parliamentary elections); step three ranges from March 2006 till its end in 2008.

PDP organizational and analytical support is rendered by Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA).
