Speaker attempts to unblock work of Parliament |

Parliamentary speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk has come up with a proposal to vote on a referendum about entry into NATO after Ukraine receives a formal offer from NATO, which may happen at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008, private Ukrainian TV reported today.
Yatsenyuk was speaking at a meeting of the agenda-setting council in Parliament today, trying to make a breakthrough in the current standoff in Parliament. "This way, we solve this situation for the next three months," he said.

NATO membership will benefit Ukraine, parliamentary speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk has said.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with a commercial TV channel broadcast on February 10, Yatsenyuk said: "I believe Ukraine's membership in the alliance will bring a plus. However, this will not happen either tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or in five, or in 10 years. This is a path to reforms."

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine has decided to stop proceedings on the constitutionality of President Viktor Yushchenko's decree of 5 June calling an early parliamentary election on 30 September, the court's press service reported today.

The opposition Party of Regions has rejected Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's accusations against it. Tymoshenko had said earlier that the policies of the previous Yanukovych Cabinet had triggered the rise in inflation.

Draft bill envisages return of capital punishment |

The Communist Party has developed a draft bill that supports re-introduction of capital punishment, a Ukrainian business daily reported today.
If the bill is passed, killers and rapists would face the death penalty. The death penalty was outlawed in Ukraine back in 2000.

President Viktor Yushchenko has said that after he submitted a bill on state procurements to Parliament, both opposition as well as coalition MPs started to collect signatures for the dismissal of speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Yushchenko said this at a meeting with the regional governors in Kyiv on February 7.

Draft bill on referendums registered in Parliament |

Yuriy Klyuchkovskiy, an MP of the propresidential Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defence bloc, has registered a draft bill on referendums with the parliamentary section for registration of draft bills. The issue of referendums is certainly a topical one, with the current parliamentary opposition demanding a referendum on the issue of NATO membership.
