Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said that he is dissolving Parliament and calling an early election. Speaking in a pre-recorded address to the nation broadcast on several TV channels on the evening of October 8, Yushchenko said: "In line with the Constitution of Ukraine, I announce the ending of the work of the Supreme Council of the sixth convocation and the holding of an early parliamentary election. The poll will take place democratically and legally." Yushchenko's decision came after parliamentary forces were unable to agree on the formation of a new coalition. The propresidential Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defence bloc pulled out of its coalition with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc in early September. The Constitution grants a 30-day term for formation of a coalition, after which the president of Ukraine has the right to dissolve Parliament. Yushchenko did not specify the date when the early election will be held, though state TV channel UT1 later said that in line with the Constitution, the election should be held in mid-December. This early election will be the third parliamentary election in Ukraine in less than three years. |
