Senior Ukrainian MPs have denied presidential press secretary Iryna Vannykova's statement that all parliamentary factions spoke in favour of an early election during consultations with President Viktor Yushchenko, 5 Kanal TV reported today.
Deputy parliamentary speaker Mykola Tomenko, a representative of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's bloc, was quoted as saying that the meeting with the President was not held in an amicable and peaceful atmosphere. "There is the impression we were hugging the president for an hour and also drank one for the road so that an early election should be held. I do not know how other factions will articulate their position but the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc was on the side of the absolute majority of Ukrainian citizens and views a possible decree calling an early election as an unpopular step because the majority of the people are against it," he was shown saying. Volodymyr Lytvyn, the leader of the eponymous bloc, has said he is not satisfied after the consultations and that they were held in vain, 5 Kanal added. It also quoted Oleksandr Yefremov, a deputy leader of the opposition Party of Regions, as saying that his party was categorically against an early election but that it simply saw no other way to resolve the unfolding political crisis. |
