Parliamentary speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk has come up with a proposal to vote on a referendum about entry into NATO after Ukraine receives a formal offer from NATO, which may happen at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008, private Ukrainian TV reported today. Yatsenyuk was speaking at a meeting of the agenda-setting council in Parliament today, trying to make a breakthrough in the current standoff in Parliament. "This way, we solve this situation for the next three months," he said. Yatsenyuk urged MPs to decide when President Viktor Yushchenko can address Parliament. This is a crucial document, he said, "which we have failed to hear." Yatsenyuk said that bills on the cancellation of MPs immunity, state procurements and changes to the 2008 state budget have been planned for consideration in Parliament at this session. However, the opposition Party of Regions will not support Yatsenyuk's proposal on unblocking Parliament, the party's spokeswoman, Hanna Herman, told journalists after the agenda-setting meeting. |
