The Communist Party of Ukraine, a member of the ruling coalition, has condemned the latest increase in household gas rates.
"I personally and my comrades in the faction and party are categorically against such a policy. Nobody has the right to dictate from abroad the demands which have now been embodied in the decision taken by the cabinet, namely the increase in household gas rates at the instruction of the IMF," the press service of the Communist Party today quoted its leader, Petro Symonenko, as saying. In Symonenko's opinion, the state and cabinet should carry out a so-called "compensatory policy", that is, "use Ukraine's internal resources for the people". He suggested using domestically-produced gas for the needs of the population, burning Ukrainian coal instead of expensive imported coal and ensuring that boilers at utility companies use solid fuel. The Cabinet of Ministers has revoked a resolution to the effect that gas prices for the population, heating supply companies and industrial enterprises have to be kept at the level of 2009 throughout 2010. It was adopted by the previous cabinet led by Yulia Tymoshenko. The resolution cancelling it (No 616 of July 21 2010) is on the official website of the Cabinet of Ministers. The Tymoshenko cabinet adopted this resolution following the presidential election, which was won by Viktor Yanukovych. The new cabinet led by Mykola Azarov was confirmed by Parliament on March 11.
