Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has congratulated the Ukrainian Parliament and the nation on the 20th anniversary of the declaration of Ukrainian sovereignty. His pre-recorded speech was shown at a special session of the Ukrainian Parliament on July 16, which was broadcast live by the parliamentary TV channel Rada.

"As the country's president and guarantor of the Constitution, I am fully determined to ensure such domestic political and foreign factors in Ukraine which would let our people see that irresponsible authorities have gone for good," Yanukovych said. "Today we have finally attained long-awaited political stability. The foundation for profound systemic reforms, which would take Ukraine to the path of sustainable social and economic development, is being laid."

"A European perspective, development of strategic relations with centres of global politics, including the Russian Federation, will ensure our economic prosperity and social progress", he added.

He recalled that 20 years ago the Parliament of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic made an uneasy decision "without which there would have been no independence in the future". "There may be various evaluations of that period but there is one thing that remains unshakable: it is our history and no-one is allowed to re-write it," Yanukovych stressed.
