The Ukrainian Parliament today adopted the law on the Judicial system and the status of judges (No 6450) in the second and final readings at its evening sitting . A total of 260 MPs voted in favor. The bill was tabled by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Most of the votes came from the pro-presidential Party of Regions (170), with the Communist Party faction (27) and Lytvyn Bloc (19) also supporting it. The other votes came from the opposition Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (24) and Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defence Bloc (16) and from unaffiliated MPs (4). The head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, Vasyl Onopenko, was given the opportunity to speak in Parliament at the start of the evening sitting. He said he opposed the bill. MPs then spent almost six hours deliberating and voting on over 600 amendments out of 1,724 amendments tabled in total by MPs. However, the majority of amendments were supported by only a few MPs. In fact, only a handful of amendments found the support of 226 or more MPs.
