The Ukrainian Parliament today ratified the Council of Europe's Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data and an additional protocol to the Convention regarding supervisory authorities and trans-border data flows. A total of 317 MPs out of 426 registered in Parliament voted in favor. Ratification of the Convention and protocol will help secure the right of every individual, whatever his nationality or residence, with regard to the protection of personal data.
It is expected that ratification will also promote the formation of Ukraine's positive image on the international arena and allow the country to strengthen its cooperation with other states in the area of law-enforcement. The ratification of the Convention is a prerequisite for the introduction of biometric information for foreigners who cross the Ukrainian border.
The aim of the Convention is to secure on the territory of each party for every individual, whatever his or her nationality or residence, respect for rights and fundamental freedoms and, in particular, the right to privacy with regard to automatic processing of personal data relating to him or her. Ukraine joined the Council of Europe in 1995.
