Parliament adopts law on guarantees for country's nuclear-free status PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010 13:55

The Ukrainian Parliament today adopted a law in its second and third readings (No 5296) on real guarantees for Ukraine's nuclear-free status. A total of 345 lawmakers out of the 429 registered in the session hall voted in favor of the document.

According to the law, the Cabinet of Ministers should ensure the drafting of an international legal document aimed at developing the provisions of the Budapest Memorandum and the creation of real international guarantees of national security for nuclear-free Ukraine. The Ukrainian government should now take the necessary steps and procedural formalities to ensure that this document is considered and signed by the world's nuclear states.

During today's discussion of the bill MP Taras Chornovil, representing the sectoral parliamentary committee, said that Ukraine needs real guarantees as those given when Ukraine gave up its nuclear arms were only of a declarative nature.
