The Ukrainian Parliament adopted the law on the principles of domestic and foreign policy at about midnight yesterday. A total of 259 MPs voted in favor of the document. It sets obtaining membership of the European Union and maintaining good-neighbourly relations with Russia as aims.
However, there is no clause on Ukraine becoming a NATO member. The draft law was submitted by President Viktor Yanukovych but was opposed by the opposition in Parliament yesterday, which insisted that the status of the Ukrainian language should be confirmed as "the sole state language" in the document.
