The Ukrainian Parliament today elected its four candidates of the National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting. Parliament elected Yevhen Baranov (249 votes), Oksana Yelmanova (250 votes), Iryna Opilat (249 votes) and Mykola Fartushniy (362 votes). The Party of Regions submitted the candidacies of Baranov and Fartushniy, while Yelmanov’s came from the Communist Party and the Lytvyn Bloc put forward Iryna Opilat. These three political forces are part of the ruling parliamentary coalition.
After the vote Our Ukraine People’s Self-Defence MP Iryna Heraschenko said that this decision was “not a slap in the face of the opposition but that of civil organizations” who submitted their candidates. She added that “Kolesnikov and Akhmetov will stand in line in front of Khoroshkovskyy’s office to receive broadcasting licenses”.
Oleh Lyashko, an MP of the opposition Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, said that Valeriy Khoroshkovskiy, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, now controls five members of the eight-member National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting.
