Constitutional Court says holding simultaneous local elections next spring violates Constitution of Ukraine PDF Print E-mail

The clause on holding simultaneous local elections in Ukraine on March 27, 2011 is not in line with the provisions of Article 157 of the Constitution of Ukraine.

This is stipulated in a ruling by the Constitutional Court on compliance with Articles 157 and 158 of the Constitution of Ukraine of a bill introducing constitutional amendments regarding the powers of local councils and the heads of villages and towns, which was adopted on June 17, 2010 and published today.

At the same time, the court ruled that the clauses of the bill establishing a five-year term of office for the deputies of the Crimean Supreme Council, local councils and heads of villages and towns are in line with Articles 157 and 158 of the Constitution of Ukraine.

On April 1, 2010 the Ukrainian Parliament asked the Constitutional Court to rule on a bill amending the Constitution of Ukraine to increase the term of office of village and town heads from four to five years, and establish a five-year term of office for deputies of the Crimean Supreme Council and local councils of all levels, including those elected in regular elections held in 2006.

President Viktor Yanukovych and members of his cabinet have said recently that they favor the holding of local elections on October 31, 2010.
