Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohylov answered questions posed by MPs at the latest government hour session held at today's plenary sitting of the Ukrainian Parliament. He initially answered questions submitted in writing in advance by MPs from the opposition Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and Our Ukraine People's Self-Defence Bloc factions. Afterwards, opposition MPs as well as those from the ruling coalition had the opportunity to ask questions verbally. In the latter half hour most of the questions asked came from MPs belonging to the coalition.
Mohylov answered questions from opposition MPs ranging from the day-to-day work of the police force to the recent death in police custody of a student in Kyiv. He said that all the materials in this particular case had been passed to the Kyiv prosecutor's office. Some comments and questions from MPs were critical and Mohylov promised to look into specific cases.
Questions from coalition MPs focused on the difficult conditions in which the police force operates, including the lack of funds, especially in the provinces. Mohylov said that the fight against corruption in his ministry had begun, as evidenced by the detention of a handful of senior officers.
The opposition Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and Our Ukraine People's Self-Defence Bloc factions had requested at the meeting of the parliamentary Agenda-Setting Council held on June 14 that Mohylov be the latest senior member of the Cabinet of Ministers to answer questions from MPs. Deputy prime minister for the economy Serhiy Tyhypko answered questions on June 14.
